Event to Focus Especially on “Overlooked” Human Microbes Important in Human Health
Tokyo, April 21, 2023 — Japan’s Corundum Systems Biology Inc., a company active in unlocking next-generation life science technologies with a focus on the microbiome for human health, will become the main sponsor of the Harvard Chan Microbiome in Public Health Center (HCMPH)’s “Microbial Communities Beyond the Bacteriome” Symposium this year. Fifth in the annual microbiome series at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, this year’s Symposium will be held in Boston, Massachusetts, on May 15, 2023.

This 2023 Symposium will highlight the field’s deepened understanding of “often-overlooked non-bacterial microbes that can play unique roles in health and environmental phenotypes,” such as viruses and fungi.

Dr. Curtis Huttenhower co-directs the HCMPH with Dr. Wendy Garrett, both professors at the Harvard Chan School. He said of the symposium sponsorship, “Our team at the Microbiome Center always looks forward to the annual symposium, since it’s such a valuable opportunity both to hear from the research community and to share our work. We deeply appreciate the cutting-edge science presented by all of our speakers, and Corundum Systems Biology’s support facilitates free registration and access to the symposium material for any attendees locally or worldwide.” While the symposium is the Center’s main public event each year, the HCMPH also carries out a variety of partnerships and research projects with academic and industry collaborators, Dr. Huttenhower went on to explain.

Corundum Systems Biology Inc.’s Hidehiko Otake adds, “There is strong excitement among us here to be associated with the HCMPH through this sponsorship. An open discussion of viral, archaeal, fungal, and other microbes that frequently lay under the radar among non-bacterial members of the human microbiome and microbial communities is important, as they hold keys to deciphering further understanding regarding human health. We expect the Symposium to generate deep and active discussion of how such microbes play roles and interact to sustain human quality of life.”

The Symposium, open to all free of charge, will be held at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, on May 15.

Online streaming is also available for those who cannot attend in person. To register or for more information on the Symposium: https://hcmph.sph.harvard.edu/hcmph-symposium/

Corundum Systems Biology Inc. aspires to become an Innovation Hub in the field of microbial communities and the human microbiome. The company, based in Tokyo, Japan, focuses in three business areas: development of new businesses, development of biometric database and data analysis platforms, and grant-giving to facilitate and hasten R&D.
